The enchanted brook
the Nonnenfließ flows towards the town Eberswalde through a well-wooded and pristine valley in the Barnim area.
It lies within the nature protection area and
fauna-flora-habitat Nonnenfließ-Schwärzetal (valley of the two brooks Nonnenfließ and Schwärze).
Due to the still-existing flora und fauna there, it is the most precious flowing water in the Nature Park Barnim from an ecological point of view. In some of its parts it classes among the reference waters of the land Brandenburg.
About 300 years ago its water power was used by mills installed at six different points along the brook.
Human interference adversely affected ecological parameters
such as biological continuity, water retention capacity,
structural and biological diversity.
Project targets
The renaturation of the Nonnenfließ helps to maintain and
develop an ecologically continuous watercourse system as well as typical secondary habitats of rare animals and plants.
These are in particular near-natural deciduous woods and wetland, such as springs, springlands, small waters, reeds,
scrubland and meadows.
It is the main goal to
sustainably renaturate the water balance in the catchment area of the Nonnenfließ-Schwärzetal (valley of the brooks Nonnefließ and Schwärze).
Biological continuity, water retention capacity, structural as
well as biodiversity of the Nonnenfließ should be improved by
implementing 31 projects.
The objectives of the EU water framework directive (WFD), articles 1 and 4 as well as of the EU Fauna-Flora-Habitat-Guideline 92/43, enacted 21.05.1992, will be accomplished.
For especially relevant species throughout Europe, such as the European bullhead (Cottus gobio) a
considerable population increase should be achieved.
Ichtyologists exchange knowledge and experience and monitor the development of the fish fauna.
German and Polish specialists compare the development of the fish population of the Drawa
the Nonnenfließ after the renaturation measures. Es erfolgt ein Fachaustausch von Ichthyologen und ein Monitoring zur
Entwicklung der Fischfauna.
For this purpose a 5-year cooperation agreement between the Sponsoring Association of the Barnim Nature Park and the Drawienski National Park was signed on 13 March 2004.
Special information panels along the Nonnenfließ
path inform visitors about historical facts, biological topics as well as about the effects of the renaturation effort.
