The protection of bats in the countryside: in the Nature Park Barnim and the Drawienski National Park

Thanks to decades of voluntary monitoring work of environmentalists
we now have a comprehensive data collection on bats.
These data show that a long-term conservation of their habitats
will not be guaranteed in many places of the Nature Park.

The commercial forests in our region lack old and deadwood.
Furthermore, there are hardly any caves in the North German Plain.
These are the reasons for the fact the bats depend on roosts
in old buildings, cellars and underground shelters for hibernation
and breeding.

Many of these roosts have got lost in the process of housing and
residential activities, such as attic conversion, demolition of old
buildings and facade modernisation.

In the Nature Park there are numerous former underground bunkers,
vehicle halls and water containers, which – after special construction
measures - could give appropriate shelters for bats.
This was the topic of the project, which had been implemented
from 2005 to 2007 by the promotion society Barnim Nature Park
in ccoperation with the Nature Park Administration and
the Warden Service.

Intent and Measures

It is the declared intent to improve the bats’ living conditions
and thus to increase the bat population in the Barnim Nature Park
(located in the Barnim county) and in the Polish partner region,
namely the Drawienski National Park.

To achieve this goal the following measures would be necessary:
- Completion of the monitoring data on the bat population
and their roosts in both reservates
- Exchange of information between German and Polish specialists
- Safeguarding the reconstruction of underground shelters
appropriate to the necessities of the bats
- Installation of bat boxes in forests with no or not enough
  old and deadwood
- Organisation of information campaigns about the protection
  possibilities in residential areas
- Special publicity work for more sympathy and tolerance for bats
